Checklist in case of an accident
Ensure safety

Safety must come before helping.

  • Turn on hazard warning lights.
  • Put up warning triangle so that it is clearly visible.

On motorways: approx. 130 metres from the vehicle(s).
On country roads: approx. 90-100 metres from the vehicle(s).
In a built-up area: approx. 30-40 metres from the vehicle(s).
Call the emergency service if necessary.

Throughout continental Europe, the emergency phone number is 112. Motorways have emergency telephones at regular distances of 2 km. The poles along the motorway have arrows, indicating the direction of the nearest emergency telephone. When you ring the emergency service, give the following details:

  • Where did it happen?
  • What happened?
  • How many people are injured?
  • What kind of injuries?
  • Wait for queries from the emergency service manager.

First aid.

Provide first aid. Look after anyone who is injured. Make sure injured persons are lying correctly and take measures to prevent hypothermia. Talk to the injured person in a calm voice, to prevent any anxiety or panic.

Stay at the scene of the accident.

Do not under any circumstances leave the scene before the facts of the accident have been established by both partners involved.

Document the accident.

Try to obtain statements from witnesses. If possible, take photos of the scene.

Accident report form.

Use the European Accident Report Form, enclosed with this booklet. This form must be completed and signed by both drivers at the scene of the accident. It is not an admission of fault.

Call the police.

The police are not obliged to record accidents in which property damage has occurred. However, they must be called if there are injuries.

Legal advice.

If you have even the smallest doubt about whose fault it is, you need to involve a solicitor.

Do not admit liability.

Never sign a statement admitting liability under any circumstances. Otherwise your insurer might seek recourse from you.
